LOCAL ROUNDUP: High school seniors ink letters of intent

ASHLAND — A pair of Fairview seniors, two Paintsville products, an Ashland Tomcat and a Russell Red Devil solidified their college football decisions in ink on Wednesday.

Anthony Roark and Shawn Adkins traveled to the University of Pikeville, where they were two of 55 high school seniors who signed letters of intent with the Bears.

The two Fairview Eagles are linemen, with Roark being a starter for the last two full seasons. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound tackle was All-State honorable mention in 2012 after helping block Fairview rushers to a state record 6,098 yards. He's a two-time All-Area selection.

Ashland's Miles McGranahan and Russell's Nathan Perry signed with Kentucky Christian University on Wednesday.

McGranahan (6-1, 175) was an All-Area selection as a wide receiver. He also played defensive back and helped the Tomcats to a 9-3 season.

Perry (6-5, 315) was a starting offensive lineman for Russell.

In all, KCU signed 42 players on Wednesday.

Paintsville's Prater Helton signed with UPike. Fellow Tiger Lane Daniels inked with Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C.

The linebacker and slot receiver, respectively, were All-Area selections.

Hall among Mr. Basketball candidates

LEXINGTON — Johnson Central senior Shane Hall is listed among the seven candidates for Mr. Basketball, as announced on Wednesday.

Others boys finalists are Jackson Davis (Lafayette), Trent Gilbert (Scott County), Brandon Hatton (Dixie Heights), Justin Johnson (Perry County Central), Kelan Martin (Ballard) and Quentin Snider.

Miss Basketball finalists: Ivy Brown (LaRue County), MacKenzie Cann (Anderson County), Nicole Kiernan (Newport Central Catholic), JaVonna Layfield (Ballard), Kayla Rankin (Perry County Central) and Daijia Ruffin (Sacred Heart).

Hall is averaging 17.9 points, 11.8 rebounds and five blocks per game for the 13-6 Golden Eagles.

The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation will host the awards ceremony on Tuesday, March 18, in the Bluegrass Ballroom of the Lexington Center.
