PAINTSVILLE — Days after a wild win over Magoffin County, Lawrence County survived another 57th District opponent in an even closer contest.

The Bulldogs beat Paintsville, 50-49, at Paintsville High School, setting up a district showdown on Monday. The winner between Lawrence County and Johnson Central will be in the driver’s seat. The matchup is set for 7:30 in Louisa.

On Friday, Brandon Richardson led the Bulldogs (15-7) with 14 points. He hit a key 3-pointer with two minutes left to put the Dawgs up by five.

Paintsville, though, clawed back, forcing the game to come down to free throws.

Lawrence County’s Grant Kiser sank two freebies to give the Bulldogs a 50-48 lead before Paintsville’s Luke Trimble made just one of two from the foul line, allowing  Lawrence County to hold on.

Kiser scored 12 points. Trimble and Quinton Hensley each scored 12 for Paintsville (6-12).

“I’m glad we’re winning these close games,” said Lawrence County coach Josh Cook. “This is exactly what these games are like come district tournament time, usually in the 50s.”
