BOWLING GREEN — It's all Mayfield in the Class A state football championship game today. The Cardinals outscored Fairview 27-0 in the third quarter and won 55-8 at L.T. Smith Stadium on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
The Eagles, who came into the game 14-0, have lost four fumbles and thrown an interception.
Jonathan Jackson has scored four touchdowns for the Cardinals, who are appearing in the state finals for the 18th time. This is Fairview’s first appearance in the finals. Quarterback Jake Guhy has thrown for 174 yards and a pair of TDs.
Elijah King scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter to pull the Eagles within 14-8. However, penalties and turnovers have kept Fairview out of the end zone. Chris Brewer gained 103 yards in the first half.
Mayfield outgained Fairview 342 to 240 in the opening half. The Cardinals won their ninth state championship.
