Alexis Maynard enjoyed a whale of a game as Russell-Flatwoods’ Junior League Softball All-Stars got off to a fine start in the state tournament.
Because of a number of teams dropping out, Russell-Flatwoods and Leslie County locked into a best-of-three series which began on Saturday. Russell won 8-0 thanks, in large part, to Maynard’s bat and Sara Hieneman’s pitching.
The two meet again today at 1 p.m. in London. If Russell wins, it will advance to the Junior League Central Region Tournament in Akron, Ohio.
Maynard was 3-for-4 with five RBIs on Saturday. She smacked her first-ever home run in the fourth inning to drive in a pair.
Hieneman struck out 14 of the 25 batters she faced. She also hit a home run, a solo shot in the seventh.
Neither team scored until Maynard’s bomb broke it open in the fourth.
Russell-Flatwoods added three in the fifth as Hannah Blaine, Breanna Craft and Annalee Miller all singled to lead up to a Maynard double.
Catcher Jaclyn Holmes threw out two runners trying to steal. She also hit a double.
