Alexis Robinson came away highly impressed from a trip last weekend to the University of Colorado.
So much so that Ashland’s heavily recruited junior guard has verbally committed to the Pac-12 Buffaloes, who began the season ranked in the Top 20 nationally but have been hampered by injuries.
“I fell in love with the whole place, starting when I got there and saw the mountains,” Robinson said before Ashland’s practice Monday. “The facilities are beautiful; everything was nice. I had already talked to (head coach) Linda Lappe and we had a good connection out there. We really bonded. I believe in her.”
In the end, Colorado’s persistence in recruiting Robinson paid off. Despite the 1,317 miles separating Boulder, Colo., and Ashland, the Buffaloes’ coaching staff showed serious interest with multiple visits to the Blazer campus and regular phone calls.
“They have taken the red-eye (flight) in two or three times to watch her practice,” Ashland coach Bill Bradley said. “This summer, they spent a weekend here. They recruited her hard. One assistant called me all the time.”
Robinson, accompanied by her father, made the unofficial visit. Along with checking out the Colorado campus and spending time with coaches and players, Robinson watched the team play games Friday night against Arizona and Sunday afternoon against Arizona State.
After returning home, she sent a text to Bradley.
“Alexis is so low key with me,’’ the coach said. “Her message said, ‘I loved it’ with eight exclamation points. I’m really happy for her.”
Robinson is averaging 15.5, 6.2 rebounds and a handful of assists for the Kittens, who are 12-4.
Purdue, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Ball State and Oklahoma State, along with Marshall, are among other Division I programs that showed considerable interest. A member of Kentucky’s coaching staff attended Ashland’s most recent game.
“Alexis made calls to all those schools to let them know about her decision,” Bradley said.
Robinson was the All-Area Player of the Year as a sophomore and helped lead Ashland to back-to-back 16th Region championships.
