State Tennis Day 1: Several locals move into round of 16

LEXINGTON — A number of local athletes fared well in the initial rounds of the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament on Thursday.

Ashland sophomore Lauren Fazenbaker, the 16th Region girls singles champion, upset fifth-seeded Neha Rao (South Laurel) 6-3, 2-6, 10-8, to advance to the round of 16.

Greenup County’s Madison Hill joined her in winning two matches.

Fazenbaker takes on Brooke Warden (Dixie Heights) today at 10:30 a.m. at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Complex. Hill has No. 3 seed Michelle McKamey (McCracken County) at 10:30.

Ashland’s Robby Berry punched his sweet 16 ticket with a pair of convincing victories. He’ll square off against Bowling Green’s Will True, a 5-seed, today at 9:15 a.m. for a quarterfinals berth.

No. 4 seed David Bush (Rose Hill) cruised into the round of 16.

Ashland’s Robby Krick and Lawrence County’s Cole McCreary won their first-round matches before falling short in the second.

In doubles action, Wesley Daniel and Alex Newmark (Ashland) disposed of their first two opponents. They’ll take on Ryan Crump and Matthew Ko, of Lexington Catholic, today at 8 a.m.

Three area girls doubles teams made it into the round of 16. Lawrence County’s Allie Dotson and Bailey Thompson, Russell’s Kierstin Hensley and Maci Ferguson, and Russell’s Claudia Kendrick and Hunter Nguyen all advanced. All three teams will play today at 11:45 a.m.

On Wednesday night, Ashland’s boys lost to St. Xavier, 3-0, in team competition. St. X took the title with an ensuing win over McCracken County.

Those that won one match before falling in the round of 32 included: Austin Craft/Will Frye (Ashland) in boys doubles; Micah Leslie (Greenup County) in girls singles; Abby Haynes (Lawrence County) in girls singles; Rachael Bush/Madison Lett (Rose Hill) in girls doubles; and Chelsea Shepherd/Eden Webb (Lawrence County) in girls doubles.
