AARON SNYDER: Talking playoffs? Playoffs?!

ASHLAND — Congratulations to the nine northeastern Kentucky football teams still standing in 2013.

How many will remain after opening week of the postseason?

That’s right, we’re already talking playoffs. A dozen years since former Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Mora’s famous rant about the topic, we’re talking playoffs!

It’s cliche, but coaches preach that this time of year brings a fresh start and a clean slate.

Who’s buying in? We shall see.

Who knows? Maybe ’13 will prove to be a special number for one of the following teams ...

Playoff Week 1

Ashland 34, Holmes 20: Coach Tony Love has faith in his defense. The Tomcats show why tonight as they clamp down in clutch moments.

Highlands 56, Boyd County 7: Bluebirds pour it on, but Lions can take momentum into next season with win over Greenup County and close call against Tolsia.

Johnson Central 62, Harrison County 12: Central is grand as Thorobreds’ offense is stationary.

Lawrence County 41, Magoffin County 22: Bulldogs snap three-game skid with rejuvenating road victory. They are 2-3 away from home this season.

Garrard County 30, Lewis County 21: Lions keep it close with air attack, but homestanding Golden Lions continue to play stout defense to emerge on top. They have held foes to seven or fewer points in five of their last six affairs.

Paintsville 42, South Floyd 14: Raiders are no match for Tigers.

Raceland 55, Phelps 6: This one could get ugly in a hurry. Rams pile up points early and call off the dogs.

Covington Catholic 52, Rowan County 17: Vikings might be getting sick of playing this Saturday matinee every year. Then again, third in the district is not a bad place for Rowan County.

Russell 27, Estill County 20: Red Devils’ defense was exposed like it hadn’t been all season last Friday against Pikeville, but redemption comes quickly with a nice win on Ivan McGlone Field.
