The 62nd annual Kiwanis Bowl will take the scene on Halloween tonight at Putnam Stadium.
Russell’s freshman team comes into the game undefeated for the second straight season. The Red Devils beat Ashland, 41-16, last October to notch its first unbeaten season in 20-plus years.
The Red Devils’ roster was thin at first, with just 13 players. They have 18 now, said sixth-year coach Buford Hurley. They are 5-0, and 7-0 if two JV/freshman combination games are included.
“They’ve bought into the program, bought into what we’re doing,” Hurley said. “We’ve had a couple heart-attack close calls, but we’ve won in the end.”
Ashland comes into the tradition-rich matchup with a 2-5 record.
Records don’t matter a bit in this game, Hurley said.
“You never know when you play Ashland in the Kiwanis Bowl,” he said. “With the weather being rainy, maybe it’ll come down to who makes the least mistakes. They come ready to play every year.”
