SOCCER ROUNDUP: Fowler scores late goal to lead Russell to win

Russell, Ashland boys pick up big wins

FLATWOODs — Bryce Fowler scored off an assist from Patrick Soucy with about 30 seconds remaining to lift Russell past 11th-ranked Bishop Brossart 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Fowler, a senior, came up big down the stretch for the Red Devils in their final game of the regular season. Bishop Brossart led 2-1 in the second half before Fowler scored the tying goal with 10 minutes left. Joey Fischer had the assist.

Fischer gave Russell an early 1-0 lead, scoring on a header off Austin Lizarraga’s pass from beyond midfield.

Bishop Brossart got a goal from Nick Dierig to tie it at the half, then took a 2-1 lead in the second period.

After an 0-2 start to the season, Russell has posted a 12-1-2 record.

The Red Devils will play Boyd County on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the 63rd District semifinals at Russell Soccer Complex. Monday’s opener at 6 matches Ashland against Rose Hill Christian.

Spring Valley 1

ASHLAND Jake Day scored four goals and assisted two others as Ashland rolled past Spring Valley 11-1 on Thursday night.

The Tomcats (11-7-2) opened a 7-0 halftime lead.

Mackenzie Malloy finished with two goals and an assist for Ashland, while Austin Kelley and Jacob Belville each supplied a goal and assist. John Pina, Casey Clark and Hunter Gullett put in the other goals.

Robert Wesley had two assists. Troy Burchett and Bryce Bentley added one apiece.

Spring Valley’s Jacob Maddox scored in the second half.

Ashland begins postseason play Monday against Rose Hill Christian in the 63rd District Tournament at Russell.
