PREP ROUNDUP: Boyd County finishes trip strong at 4-3

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — Boyd County ran into some tough teams at Cocoa Beach Spring Training, but finished the week out strong with a win.

After starting the week 3-0, Boyd County fell to Saegertown, Pa. 3-2 on Monday.

Brianna Crooks went 2-for-4 while Hunter Reeves finished 2-for-3 in the loss. Taylor Wheeler added a double for the Lady Lions.

In Boyd County’s second game on Wednesday, the Lady Lions lost to host school Cocoa Beach, 2-0.

Cocoa Beach was coming into the game with a 17-1 record and held Boyd County to just two hits.

Boyd County’s Alex Meade pitched a strong game against Cocoa Beach, going seven innings, striking out 12 and giving up one earned run in the loss.

On Wednesday, the Lady Lions fell to Astronaut, Fla., 10-5. Boyd County picked up 11 hits in the loss.

Wheeler went 2-for-5 with two runs, Emily Stewart went 3-for-5, Nicole Goins went 2-for-2 and Reeves went 2-for-3.

Boyd County finished the spring trip strong by defeating Satellite, Fla., 14-4 on Wednesday.

Nicole Goins went 3-for-4 with two runs, Destiny Goins went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Lakin Crum went 2-for-3 and Reeves went 3-for-3 while scoring three times.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Ashland was right with St. Mary’s Ryken, Md., but couldn’t get past the last out.

In the Bottom of the seventh and two outs, St. Mary’s Ryken scored on a base hit to defeat the Kittens 1-0 in a pitcher’s dual at the Grand Strand Softball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.  

Megan Hensley threw a complete game for Ashland while striking out 12, but gave up the one run in the seventh to pick up the loss. The sophomore also went 2-for-3 from the plate.

With one starter out in the game already, second baseman Katie Caron had to leave the game to receive stitches.

Ashland will finish at the Grand Strand Softball Classic today when it takes on South Range, Ohio, and Jeffersontown in a doubleheader.

LOUISVILLE Ashland put the ball in play, it just always seemed to find its way to the other team.

Ashland was held to 5 hits and lost 10-0 in six innings to the team from Illinois. But the Tomcats only struck out one time.

Jared Slone and Cameron Fritz both had doubles for the Tomcats.     

The game was the Tomcats’ last game in the Louisville Christian Academy Tournament. Ashland finished the trip 1-3.
