Iconic Russell basketball coach dies at 85

ASHLAND — Marvin Meredith, a  beloved high school basketball coach and community leader, died early Tuesday morning. He was 85.

Meredith coached Russell High School to 677 victories in a 31-year coaching career that included 16th Region championships in 1967, 1968 and 1972. He also coached the Kentucky All-Stars in 1987 and made eight trips to the regional finals.

Meredith was also an outstanding athlete at Catlettsburg High School, where he played everything. He went on to Marshall College to play basketball for Cam Henderson and run track for the Thundering Herd. He held the Ohio Valley Conference record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 10.20.

Meredith served three terms (12 years) as a Boyd County commissioner and was a longtime member of Twin Fork Nazarene.
