PREP ROUNDUP: Boyd blasts off in Florida

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — Boyd County is off to a hot start in the Florida sunshine.

On Sunday, the Lady Lions picked up three wins as part of the Cocoa Beach Softball Spring Training.

Boyd opened up the event with a doubleheader sweep of Wapakoneta, Ohio, winning 7-4 and 14-9.

In the first game, it was Taylor Wheeler who did most of the damage, going 2-of-3 and scoring two runs.

In the second game, the entire Lady Lions team shined as Boyd totaled 20 hits.

Emily Stewart led the way, going 3-for-5 including a two-run home run and Nicole Goins went 4-for-4.

Wheeler, Allison Roark, Lakin Crum, Destiny Goins and Hunter Reeves all had multiple hits.

Boyd County defeated Saegertown, Pa., 7-6, in Sunday’s final game. Saegertown scored six runs in the first but didn’t score again.

Boyd County (4-0) had another big game from Stewart, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Crum added two hits.

The Lady Lions play again today, after having two late games on Monday.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Ashland’s softball team opened up its eight-game string in the Grand Strand Classic with a defeat of Jefferson (W.Va.) on Monday.

Due to time constraints, the game was limited to four innings.

Megan Hensley tossed a shutout while striking out eight batters. She also scored two runs.

Katie Caron led the Kittens (3-2) offensively with a 2-for-3, two-RBI effort. McKenzie Vanover and Sydney Whitt supplied Ashland’s other two hits.

Ashland plays two games today at Myrtle Beach.
