Devils down So. Laurel, slide into third place

Skaggs nets 30 points; Evans perfect 6 for 6

ASHLAND — Russell completed its fine showing in the Ashland Invitational Tournament with a 74-59 throttling of South Laurel in the tournament’s third-place game.

The Red Devils went 2-1 over the course of three days, beating both South Laurel and West Jessamine. They lost to eventual champion Newport Central Catholic on Friday.

On Saturday, Kyle Skaggs continued his high-scoring ways with a 30-point effort.

Fellow senior Lance Evans turned in a 15-point, seven-rebound performance that included a 6-for-6 shooting clip from the floor.

Googie Hayes and Jacob Porter also managed to crack into double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Russell (10-4) was 22 of 29 from the free-throw line compared to South Laurel’s 4-of-10 effort from the foul line. The Cardinals fell to 4-8 on the season.

Rick Armstead netted 18 points off the bench to fuel Henderson County past West Jessamine in a close contest.

A night after Daulton Peters went off for 45 points, West Jessamine (9-4) got another sizzling individual performance. Senior Chase Fain tallied a game-high 28 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Colts.

Henderson County (11-2) went 2-0 in the tournament, but earned fifth place because bad weather delayed the team’s arrival by a day.

Starter Brandon Lowe and reserve Todd Stacy each pitched in 15 points as Boyd County cruised past Sheldon Clark on Saturday.

Together, Lowe and Stacy tossed in six 3-pointers. Tristen Burgess hit two long balls en route to 10 points.

The Lions (8-7) shot out to a 35-22 lead by halftime.

Trevor Blackburn led Sheldon Clark (7-5) with 13 points. The Cardinals have dropped five of their last six after winning their first six.
