Russell falls in Poage Landing Soccer Tournament

RUSSELL — In a battle of tournament unbeatens, Russell just couldn’t get its shots to fall.

Russell fell to Newport Central Catholic 3-1 in the teams’ last game in the Poage Landing Soccer Tournament.

The Lady Devils finished the tournament 2-1 while Newport Central Catholic finished a perfect 3-0.

Newport Central Catholic (7-1-1) had more chances at goal, out shooting Russell 21-16.

Russell (9-2-1) got its one goal from freshman Josey Owens. She was assisted on the play by sophomore Morgan Vonderheide.

Lady Devils keeper Jalyn Forsyth had 11 saves in the loss.

Russell will be back in action on Thursday when it travels to district rival Boyd County.

In Poage Landing soccer tournament action from Ashland, the Kittens lost to Spencer County 5-4.

Ashland, which went 1-2 in the tournament, will be in action again on Sept. 24 against district rival Russell on the road.
