RACELAND — Behind double-digit kills from three players, host Raceland (9-0) claimed its third 16th Region All “A” Classic title in the last five years after holding off Fairview (4-4) 25-12, 25-14, 24-26, 25-5, in the championship match.

The Lady Rams also earned All “A” crowns in 2011 and 2010; the latter tournament was the only other time the event was held at Raceland.

Raceland has dominated Fairview in recent seasons and now owns a 23-match win streak against the Lady Eagles, including capturing 10 straight at “The Palace”. Fairview’s last victory in the series came in 2005. The Lady Rams are 4-0 at home this season and are 6-1 in their last seven matches in their gym.

In the opening game of the championship, Raceland used a 9-0 run to create separation. The Lady Eagles scored the next four points, but the Lady Rams earned the win by tallying the final five.

Raceland also used a big final run (10-4) to finish out the second game.

The hosts jumped out to a 9-2 advantage in the third game, but Fairview came storming back and eventually tied the score at 22-22. A pair of Rebecca Thompson service aces gave the Lady Eagles the 26-24 win.

Raceland cruised in the fourth game, surging to a 16-2 edge behind nine kills and five aces, and never looked back to earn the victory and continue its best start to a season since beginning the 2010 campaign 12-0.

In the finals, the hosts held a 50-18 advantage in kills and a 15-11 edge in service aces. Kymbria Williams and MaKenzi Speaks each tallied 15 kills to lead the Lady Rams. Abby Brogan finished with 14. Williams and Megan Farley each had four service aces. Speaks also added two blocks.

Nikki Gee (seven) and Whitney Mounts (six) led the Lady Eagles in kills. Thompson paced the team with four service aces.

Earlier in the semifinals, Raceland cruised past Rose Hill 25-8, 25-12, 25-14.  Fairview topped Morgan County 25-12, 25-9, 25-11.

Raceland advances on to the state tournament, which will be played on Sept. 14 at the Mid America Volleyball Center in Jeffersontown. The Lady Rams will be in a pool that includes the winners from Regions 1, 5 and 6.

“It’s always a joy to go,” said Raceland coach Jason Clark. “These are the things that you work for … I’m glad (senior Abby Brogan) gets to go. She’s the heart and soul of this team. I couldn’t be happier for her as the captain of the team.”
