Raceland’s volleyball team had lost just one single game in its first six matches.
Russell took a quick 1-0 lead on Thursday, but the Lady Rams’ responded by reeling off the next two games handily and the third by just enough. Raceland won 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-7, 25-21) at Russell to improve to 7-0 overall and 2-0 inside the 63rd District. The victory snapped a five-match losing skid to the Lady Devils.
Kymbria Williams was pivotal throughout the second and third games. The Lady Rams junior had 11 blocks and 13 kills in total.
“She was a force defensively at the net,” said Lady Rams coach Jason Clark.
Makenzi Speaks chipped in eight kills and Abby Brogan came up with four.
According to Clark, the play of freshman libero Leigh Grubb helped immensely.
“She totally commanded the back row,” Clark said. “She was just there for everything.”
Raceland hadn’t topped Russell since the 63rd District championship in 2010.
Russell next plays at Greenup County on Sept. 5.
The Lady Rams are in action on Saturday in the All “A” Tournament at Raceland. Play begins at 10 a.m. with Raceland-Rose Hill.
