ASHLAND Ashland scored on a bases-loaded, two-out single by Haley Kilburn as the Kittens outlasted Lincoln County on Friday.

Lincoln County was at or near top of the ranks in most preseason polls in West Virginia.

McKenzie Vanover and Megan Hensley each supplied RBIs. Sydney Whitt was 2-for-4 for the Kittens (1-2).

Hensley pitched a complete game and tallied six strikeouts. Lincoln County pitcher Brook West had 10 strikeouts.

HUNTINGTON, W.VA. Boyd County used some sixth-inning, two-out heroics by Allison Roark and company to emerge victorious in its season opener.

The Lady Lions scored twice in the top of the sixth on a Roark single to beat Spring Valley by one run. Emily Stewart, who had doubled, and Nicole Goins, who had reached on an error and stolen a base, scored on the hit.

Stewart went 3-for-5 for Boyd County. She scored three times and drove in a run. Cameron Mullins tallied two hits for the Lady Lions.

Alex Milum led Spring Valley with two home runs.

WESTWOOD Fairview cruised to a five-inning mercy-rule victory over Morgan County in its home opener on Saturday, and sophomore Tayler Thompson led the way.

Thompson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. She also pitched a complete game and had seven strikeouts.

Katie Ritchie was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Maddie Kirk was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Sarah Dunn was 2-for-2 with four RBIs for the Lady Eagles (1-1).

    “Everybody looks good in helmets,” Ashland coach Tony Love said with a grin. “We’re all undefeated. There’s a lot of work to get done.
    “Our coaches and kids, we all know it, and that’s why they’re here and we’re here, and we’re gonna push hard every day.”
