PREP ROUNDUP: McCall lifts Greenup past East Carter

LLOYD — After allowing five runs in the top of the seventh, Greenup County broke out the bats for a thrilling comeback in the bottom half.

Will McCall provided the capper, a bases-clearing walk-off double, to lift the Musketeers to a 10-9 defeat over East Carter on Saturday at Greenup County High School.

Seth Boyle led off the final frame with a double. J.B. Brown then singled before two outs were recorded.

With two outs, Kyle Grubb reached on an error, Jonah Stanley singled to right field and Chase Clary walked to load the bases in a 9-7 game.

McCall completed a 3-for-5 day with a three-run double to give Greenup County its third 16th Region win in three tries early in the season.

Jesse James led East Carter (2-2) with three hits.

Greenup County (3-1) did suffer its first loss of the season earlier in the day when it fell to Cabell Midland, 7-5.

Boyle led the Musketeers with three RBIs in that game. McCall added two hits as did Grubb and Austin Forbes.

INEZ J.D. Pridemore went 3-for-4 with an RBI, but the second of his two runs scored proved to be the most pivotal play on Saturday at Sheldon Clark.

With runners on first and second in a 5-5 game, Sheldon Clark’s shorstop elected to flip to second base to try for a force out on a slow grounder. Pridemore sped from his lead off second base all the way home on a heads-up play.

Sophomore pitcher Justin Fraley came in and earned the save. Joel Mullen got the win after going six innings while striking out eight.
