Ashland survived a major scare from Greenup County in the opening round of the Girls 16th Region Soccer Tournament on Monday night.
Ashland won 2-1 in a shootout after beating the Lady Musketeers 10-0 during the regular season.
All five Ashland shooters — Aidan Young, Charity Collins, Sarah Hudson, Jenna Cook and Emma Wonn — connected after the teams battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation play, followed by two scoreless overtime periods.
Greenup County’s Brookelyn Sargent and Caitlyn Gillum made their penalty kicks before Ashland goalkeeper Young caught Lorna Rose’s shot. No. 4 shooter Olivia Ball also found the net for the Lady Musketeers (9-11-2).
In regulation, Emily Bond gave Ashland a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Greenup County’s Ball tied it by putting in a loose ball following a corner kick in the 60th minute.
With the victory, Ashland coach E.B. Lowman moved into a tie for second place on Kentucky’s all-time win list with No. 241.
The LadyCats will play Rowan County in Wednesday’s semifinals at 8 p.m.
Russell (14-8) advanced to a 6 p.m. meeting with East Carter by rolling past Fleming County 10-0. Play was stopped inside the 10-minute mark by the mercy rule.
Ashley Huffine led the Lady Devils with four goals. Lexie Frisby added two goals, while Shelby Huddleston, Jennifer Sloan, Morgan Vonderheide and Hollie Hencye also scored.
Frisby, Heather Hencye, Kodie Patrick and Brooke Fowler each had an assist.
