HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Russell girls edge Greenup

Staff report
The Independent

RUSSELL — A 63rd District see-saw battle went the way of Russell’s girls on Thursday night at Marvin Meredith Gymnasium.

The Lady Devils outlasted Greenup County, 58-57, in overtime to improve to 2-0 in the district.

Russell coach Mandy Layne called it a “team win,” which it survived on the strength of clutch Shelby Huddleston free throws with 16 seconds to go. The junior sank a pair from the charity stripe to put the Lady Devils up 58-55. On the ensuing possession, Greenup County could only manage a layup as time expired.

Maggie Jachimczuk posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead Russell (12-3). Huddleston tallied 14 points and six steals. Lexi Berry had 11 points.

“I am just really proud of my kids,” Layne said. “We’re stuck together and we pulled it out in the end. We’re extremely excited to be 2-0 in the district, but we understand that each night is going to be a war.”

The Lady Devils travel to Raceland on Saturday.

Greenup County (6-7) hosts the Lady Rams on Tuesday.
