High School Roundup: Rose Hill gets first victory

Thomas has triple-double day before Garnes Classic

ASHLAND — Cameron Thomas enjoyed a career night as Rose Hill outlasted Piarist, 75-65, for its first win of the season on Friday.

The Rose Hill senior racked up 30 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Royals (1-7) used a 26-13 fourth-quarter run to close out the win. Chase Meredith added 21 points on the strength of five 3-pointers. Piarist fell to 1-6.

Rose Hill will host the David Garnes Memorial Classic today, a JV/varsity doubleheader that begins at 6:30 p.m. at Rose Hill Christian School.

A memorial service for Garnes will be held between games. A blanket that dressed the bench after Garnes passed away will be used on the sideline again to honor the former Royal player.

COAL GROVE Led by Brian Gullion’s 24 points and double-digit scoring from three others, Minford beat Russell handily on Friday at Coal Grove.

Russell (3-8) fell behind 31-12 in the first period and couldn’t recover. Zach Tackett led the Red Devils in scoring with 16. Ramsey Mullins added 11.

Russell faces Coal Grove tonight at 8.

Russell beat Bath County on Monday, 83-58, behind the leadership of Tackett and Mullins. Each scored 14. Ethan Raby chipped in 11, Tanner Miller 10.

It took an overtime period for the Cardinals, led by Chase Parsley’s 29 points, to emerge victorious.

Bobby Anderson notched a career-best 24 points for Boyd County (3-7) in the loss. Tristan Burgess added 18.

MOUNT STERLING Both teams overcame slow starts in a tight affair, but Ashland came out on top of Paul Dunbar in the first round of the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County on Friday.

Five-foot-11 junior Shelby Gransbery notched a career-high 16 points for Ashland. She also held the player she guarded to 6-for-27 shooting from the floor.

Alexis Robinson was 5 of 6 from the foul line to help the Kittens (4-2) ice it in the fourth quarter.

Ashland scored off of 15 of Dunbar’s 18 turnovers. Dunbar is now 7-2.

The Kittens play Gallatin County in the semifinals tonight at 8.

WESTWOOD Fairview used a hot start and a balanced scoring effort to down Green, Ohio, in the Days Inn Invitational on Friday at Fairview High School.

The Lady Eagles (2-6) jumped out to a 17-2 lead after one quarter.

Nae Nae Bohanna led Fairview with 11 points. Brittany Bell and Madison Humphrey each cracked into double figures with 10.

Green (1-4) will play Phelps today following Fairview-Rose Hill, which tips off at noon and serves as the championship game.

Porter poured in a game-high 27 points as Crum had 13. Kendra Steele chipped in 11.

Rose Hill moved to 2-5, Phelps 0-2. Donessa Maynard tallied 17 for the Lady Hornets, coached by former Paintsville and Marshall star J.R. Vanhoose.
