OLIVE HILL — The Eastern Kentucky Conference announced its award recipients for the 2012 football season on Monday afternoon during a luncheon at Carter Caves State Resort Park.

Fairview, unbeaten for the second straight regular season, was crowned conferenced champion and also produced the EKC’s Player of the Year in Devon Turner.

The Eagles will compete in their third consecutive regional championship game this Friday at Pikeville. Turner, a senior, made plenty of noise on both sides of the ball as a defensive back and running back. Rushing the football, he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight season — his current numbers are 1,232 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 105 carries in 12 games.

Fairview will not be a part of the EKC next season due to scheduling conflicts, according to EKC Commissioner Gary Kidwell.

Fleming County was named EKC runner-up after a 7-5 season. Panthers quarterback Desmond McAdams was selected as Offensive Player of the Year — the senior amassed 669 yards and 11 TDs on the ground, and was 126 of 215 for 1,979 yards and 18 TDs (nine INTs) through the air.

League coaches also voted for a couple of Bath County Wildcats for high honors after they turned in an 8-3 season. Chase Hamm was named Defensive Player of the Year as Reed Fields was voted Coach of the Year by his peers. Hamm tallied 127 total tackles and had two fumble recoveries.

Other awards went to Nicholas County’s Zach Howard (Lineman of the Year), Lewis County’s Gavin Grayson (Commissioner’s Award), East Carter’s Zack Cathey and Jacob Gray (Wes Hopkins Courage Award) and Raceland’s Mark Lewis (Assistant Coach of the Year).

“We had a great banquet put on by Carter Caves,” said Kidwell, the conference’s commissioner since 1996. “We had a real good year, and we have a lot of young kids coming back. Everybody’s looking forward to next year.”
