High school roundup
Fairview wins road playoff game
Staff report
CAMPBELLSVILLE —
Fairview made some history Friday night.
The Eagles defeated Campbellsville 24-13 in the first round of the Class A playoffs. It marked the first time in school history that a Fairview team had won a playoff game on the road.
As usual, Fairview followed playmaking senior quarterback Matt Jones to victory. He threw for three first-half touchdowns and ran in an insurance TD in the fourth quarter.
“They told us after they game we were the most physical team that they’d played,” said Fairview coach Nate mcPeek. I took that as a compliment.”
The victory sets up a rematch with Raceland next week in the second round. The Rams, top-ranked in Class A, won during the regular season.
“It should be a good atmosphere,” McPeek said. “Raceland’s a great team; there’s no pressure on us.”
Fairview led 18-6 at the half with Jones finding Jeff Evans for his second touchdown reception as time expired. That was a big score, McPeek said.
“That was definitely huge for us,” he said.
Campbellsville fought back in the second half, trimming the deficit to 18-13 before Jones scored in the fourth quarter to ice the victory. It was Fairview’s eighth win in 12 games.
“That’s a good season and we’re proud of it,” McPeek said. “We’re going to enjoy this bus ride home. I’m so proud of our coaches and kids.”
Jones also completed a 60-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Shelton. Stephen Littlejohn intercepted two passes in the second half to pace the Eagles’ defense.
Campbellsville closed at 4-7.
