Louisville 51, Tennessee Tech 10
LOUISVILLE — Hunter Cantwell threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns and Victor Anderson ran for 114 yards and a score as Louisville routed Tennessee Tech 51-10 on Saturday.
Brock Bolen added two touchdowns on the ground and Louisville's defense continued its dominant play as the Cardinals bounced back following a loss to rival Kentucky in the season opener.
Louisville (1-1) rolled up 451 yards of total offense and added touchdowns on defense and special teams. The Cardinals had 202 yards in the first quarter alone — just three less than they managed in the loss to Kentucky — and manhandled the overmatched Golden Eagles (1-1), who remained winless against teams from the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Cantwell, who looked harried and unsettled against the Wildcats, appeared considerably calmer against the Golden Eagles, a member of the Football Championship Subdivision. Showing a deft touch he lacked against Kentucky, Cantwell completed 15-of-23 passes and threw touchdowns to Troy Pascley and Pete Nochta.
Louisville wasn't perfect. The Cardinals turned the ball over twice and Cantwell got hit hard more than once. Louisville also played the second half without its two most experienced offensive linemen when center Eric Wood and left tackle George Bussey went down with minor injuries.
Still, the Cardinals were hardly bothered by Tennessee Tech's spread attack, ruining Golden Eagles quarterback Lee Sweeney's return to Louisville. Sweeney spent a year with the Cardinals in 2005 before transferring, but his chances at leading the Golden Eagles to an upset ended early. Sweeney completed 14-of-25 for 93 yards and an interception before giving way to Josh Lowery in the third quarter.
Louisville held the Golden Eagles to 176 yards, including just 33 on the ground.
Though the Cardinals hardly needed the help, the Golden Eagles gift-wrapped two touchdowns thanks to a pair of mental miscues by running back Henry Sailes.
Trailing 27-0 in the second quarter, Sailes took a short pass from Sweeney and tried to cut up field. Finding his path filled with Cardinals, he pitched the ball behind him to no one in particular. Louisville defensive tackle Adrian Grady picked it up and rumbled 19 yards for a score to make it 34-0.
Things didn't get any better for Sailes in the second half. He was blocking during a Louisville punt when the ball bounced at the Tennessee Tech 1-yardline and scooted back up field, glancing off Sailes before rolling into the end zone. Louisville's Brandon Heath fell on the ball for a score that made it 51-3.
Robert Morris 27, Morehead State 13
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. - Sherrod Evers tied a school record with 10 receptions, including a 31-yard touchdown catch from Erik Cwalinski, as Robert Morris opened an early lead and cruised to a 27-13 win over visiting Morehead State on Saturday.
Evers caught 10 passes for 159 yards, which ties the school record set by Tyjuan Massey in 2005. Cwalinski completed 16 of 27 passes for 225 yards for the Colonials.
Robert Morris (1-0) opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run by Jesse Kastelic with 4:33 left in the first quarter. The touchdown capped an 8-play, 57-yard drive.
The Colonials increased their lead to 13-0 with field goals of 22 and 35 yards by Garrett Clawson in the second quarter.
Cwalinski's 31-yard touchdown pass to Evers came with 0:29 left in the second quarter, which gave Robert Morris a 20-0 lead at the intermission.
The Colonials scored again with 6:57 left in the third quarter on a one-yard run by Kastelic.
Morehead State (1-1) scored its first points on a 1-yard run by Michael Kearns with 3:16 left in the third quarter. The Eagles also scored on a 51-yard pass from Evan Sawyer to Nick Feldman with 14:12 left in the game.
Robert Morris rolled up 402 yards in total offense, while holding Morehead State to 239.
Western Ky. 37, Eastern Ky. 13
RICHMOND — In what could have been the last game in the state of Kentucky's oldest football rivalry, Western Kentucky downed Eastern Kentucky 37-13 Saturday night at Roy Kidd Stadium.
Western, who rolled up 248 yards rushing, shut out the Colonels in the second half after taking a 16-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Hilltoppers (1-1) got a 17-yard inside flanker run from freshman wide receiver Derrius Brooks with 1:40 remaining in the third quarter. Zac Minturn added the extra point to make it 23-13 Western.
The Hilltoppers then came up with a big play on special teams as Colonel return man Stephon Fuqua fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the ball was recovered by WKU's Chris Franklin at the Colonels' 20-yard line.
Ky. Wesleyan 31, Ky. Christian 28
MOREHEAD - Kentucky Christian University made a nice run at Kentucky Wesleyan College before falling 31-28 Saturday in a college football game at Morehead State University.
KCU fell to 0-2 but it wasn’t for a lack of offense. The Knights had 433 yards of total offense and freshman quarterback Ricky Phillips had a big night with a combined 389 yards passing and rushing.
The Huntington native completed 23 of 38 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 111 yards on 15 carries and scored the other TD.
Ron Blume, a Johnson Central grad, had five catches for 124 yards and a touchdown. Austin Hunter, a Boyd County grad, also had a TD catch.
With the score 31-21, Knights’ linebacker Kaleb Curtis scooped up a fumble and ran to the Panthers’ 1-yard line. But Phillips fumbled the snap on second-and-goal.
KCU did finally cut the deficit to 31-28 with 44 seconds remaining on a Phillips-to-Hunter touchdown pass. But the attempt to recover an onside kicked fail.
Wesleyan (1-1) was led by quarterback Chris Owen, who threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns.
The Knights play Saturday at Bethany College.
