MARK MAYNARD: Webb seeks 3 opinions on shoulder
Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb is seeking three additional opinions on his ailing right shoulder before deciding what to do.
General Manager Josh Byrnes told the Arizona Republic that Webb will visit Keith Meister, the Texas Rangers' team physician; David Altchek, the New York Mets' team physician; and James Andrews, a renowned orthopedic surgeon based in Birmingham, Ala.
Webb saw Andrews back in December and he told him the shoulder had the typical wear and tear for a pitcher his age.
It was also Andrews who told Webb when he was a senior at Ashland that an injured shoulder wasn’t a rotator cuff injury. Webb, of course, went on to pitch for the University of Kentucky before being drafted after his junior year.
Surgery on Webb’s right labrum remains a possibility, although a decision on how to proceed likely won't be made until next week after the doctor’s have a chance to examine him.
The rehabilitation for the labrum surgery would be about nine months.
Brown with Rowan
Rowan County High School football coach Shadon Brown is staying put.
Brown talked to Mercer County officials about an opening there before deciding that Rowan County was the place for him.
Mercer County principal Terry Yates told the Advocate-Messenger Thursday night that Brown was no longer a candidate for the position.
“Shadon is a nice young man and we did talk about the job,” Yates told the Danville newspaper. “We talked about the possibility of him being here. He had questions. I had questions.
“He did interview today about a teaching position and we talked about a coaching job. Both myself and Shadon agreed that it would not work for him here. He is no longer interested in pursuing the job.”
Last year Rowan County went 4-7 under Brown and is expected to contend for the Class 4A district championship this fall with several players returning, including top running back Darrell Cross.
Brown is the first African-American head coach in northeastern Kentucky history.
Cats’ season opener
The University of Kentucky’s football season opener against Miami University on Sept. 5 is set for a noon kickoff and will be televised by ESPNU. The game will be played at Cincinnati’s Paul Brown Stadium.
Billed as the “Rumble at the River,” tickets for the game may be ordered in person at the University of Kentucky Ticket Office, at the Joe Craft Center or on the phone at 800-928-CATS. Tickets cost $35 for upper level, $45 for lower level and $75 for club level. All seats in Paul Brown Stadium are chairbacks.
Jennings an Alouette
Chris Jennings is officially a Montreal Alouette, although he was one of five players placed on the one-week injury list Thursday.
Jennings, the former Fairview High School and Arizona standout, made the 46-man roster for the Canadian Football League team as a running back.
Jennings played well in two preseason scrimmages, rushing for 164 yards and a touchdown.
CFL rosters consist of 46 players and 42 dress for games. The roster is almost evenly divided between Canadians and Americans.
The Alouettes open the regular season at Calgary on Wednesday.
Jennings signed with Montreal last year and made the practice team but was later released. Prior to coming to Montreal, he had a tryout with the Cleveland Browns.
Jennings played two years at Arizona after two years in junior college.
