VANKIRK: Eagle Trace to be featured

Adam VanKirk -- The Independent

Morehead State’s Eagle Trace Golf Course will be featured on Inside Kentucky Golf this weekend.

The show will air today at 1:30 on WKYT prior to coverage of the PGA Tour’s AT&T Classic tournament.

Opened in 1995, Eagle Trace hosted the Kentucky Men’s State Amateur in 1998 and 2000 and the Kentucky Women’s State Amateur in 1999.

Morehead State purchased Eagle Trace in April of 2007. Both of the university’s teams (men’s and women’s) play the course for home matches and tournaments.

Inside Kentucky Golf episodes will also be available for viewing at www.kygolf.org.

Eagle Trace is located near Exit 133 off of Interstate 64.

Run By the River

The 31st annual Run By the River is set for June 14, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The 5K and 10K races are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of East Greenup County.

Entry fee is $15 through June 7, or $20 after that date.

Billed as the longest continuously operating road race in Kentucky, the Run By the River features a virtually flat course starting in downtown Russell, then along the Ohio River through Worthington and back.

All registered entrants receive a T-shirt and goodie bag. Trophies will go to the male and female overall winners, as well as the top three finishers in 14 age groups.

For entry forms or more information, contact race director Tim Gearhart at (740) 532-0932 or at timgearhart@bright.net.

Hospice tennis

Sixth-annual Community Hospice Tennis Tournament is scheduled for June 6-8 at the Ashland Tennis Center.

Registration will be accepted until June 3 at noon. Entry fee is $20 per event (per player) with a three-event limit. Entrants will receive a T-shirt, and awards will be presented to the winners and finalists in each event.

A player cookout is set for June 7 at noon at the ATC.

All proceeds from the tournament will benefit programs and services of Community Hospice.

Registration forms are available on-line at www.chospice.org. For more information, contact tournament director Jerry Groce at 329-2245 or Community Hospice at (606) 329-1890.

Heroes welcome

Huntington’s professional indoor football team has just two home games remaining in the season and have announced a couple promotions to wrap up the season in style.

The Heroes take on the Erie RiverRats at Big Sandy Superstore Arena tonight at 7. A Armed Services Night promotion will allow anyone with a military or veterans I.D. to see the game free of charge.

On May 31, the Heroes will close out the regular season by taking on the Reading Express for Guns n’ Hoses Night. Any member of law enforcement or emergency services will be admitted free of charge (proper I.D. must be presented).

The Heroes play in the American Indoor Football Association. They currently lead the East Division of the Eastern Conference with a 5-4 record. More info can be found online at www.heroesindoorfootball.com.
