Hamilton signs with Pikeville

— Versatile Russell High School baseball player B.J. Hamilton is getting his wish.
Hamilton, a senior pitcher, outfielder and catcher, recently signed with Pikeville College.
“I wanted to play at the next level ever since Little League,’’ Hamilton said. “My dad (Dan) started out coaching me when I was young. I guess he inspired me to go on.’’
Hamilton, who has a 3.2 grade point average, plans to pursue a career in the medical field and said he was drawn by Pikeville College’s med school program.
On the diamond, Hamilton is batting over .300 and has 24 RBIs for the Red Devils this season and recently posted back-to-back pitching victories over Raceland and Ashland.
“B.J. has had a real solid high school career,’’ said Russell coach Mike Martino. “A couple of years ago, he played a big role when we won 25 games. The last two seasons, he has been a full-time pitcher, outfielder and even caught some this year.’’
Martino called Hamilton a team player with a strong work ethic.
“He’s been a real pleasure to coach,’’ Martino said. “You’ve heard of those gym rats in basketball. B.J. is like a ballfield rat in baseball. He’s always out there working on his game.’’
Hamilton began receiving baseball instruction from Martino several years prior to high school.
“I can’t thank coach Martino enough for what he’s done,’’ Hamilton said. “He started working with me on fundamentals when I was 11 or 12. I pretty much grew up with coach.’’
Martino also introduced Hamilton to Pikeville College head coach Don Ashby. Hamilton made a visit to Pikeville before his senior season and is looking forward to joining the NAIA program.
“Coach Ashby seemed like somebody I would really like to play for,’’ Hamilton said. “I just want to fit in wherever they need me.’’
Pikeville College’s roster includes several area players. Hamilton will rejoin former Russell standout Justin Potter.
Last year, Hamilton helped Ashland Post 76 win the American Legion junior state championship. He batted second and played left field.
