Rain washes away some good games

Heavy bouts of rain and thunderstorms in the area washed out a loaded schedule of high school baseball and softball on Thursday evening.

A premier matchup on the baseball side was to pit 16th-Region frontrunner Greenup County against traditional power Boyd County. With Boyd County already having a full schedule next week, it doesn’t look like there will be a reschedule date.

“Boyd County was already scheduled for four days, so it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to do that unless they get a cancellation,” Greenup County coach Greg Logan said.

Logan is, however, looking to pick up a game on the back end of next week, likely on Thursday or Friday.

The Musketeers have just two games on the schedule for next week, the final week of the regular season. They play at East Carter on Monday and at Wheelersburg on Tuesday.

If Greenup County can get out of Grayson with a victory, it would give the Musketeers a perfect 13-0 record against region competition, given they don’t pick up another game before the close of the regular season.

But while Logan says a dominate regular season is something he stands tall for, he knows it’s not the true measuring stick of success.

“It’s been good so far, we’ve had good outings and performances and you can’t take that away,” Logan said. “But the postseason is going to determined how people are going to feel about your success.”

Greenup County, winners of 10 straight, open district play May 19 against Raceland. The Rams are the hosts of the unseeded 63rd District Tournament.

“Give the weather and all the other factors, we’ve prepared as well as we could have,” Logan said. “We’re ready to go into battle and put our best foot forward. We’re ready to go full steam ahead.”

Greenup County is set to play in the Fayette County Invitational this weekend.

Other baseball games canceled Thursday were Ashland at 15th Region power Lawrence County, East Carter at Fairview, Rowan County at Raceland and Lewis County at Russell.

In softball action, four 16th Region heavyweights were set to do battle in a pair of games.

Raceland at Russell will be made up at noon on Saturday. A potential make-up date did not look likely for an Ashland at Boyd County game.

District baseball and softball tournaments begin the week of May 19. The 16th Region baseball tournament begins the week of May 26 at Morehead. The region softball tournament, which also begins the week of May 26, will be played on Rowan County’s new field in Morehead.
