Greene’s dream comes true with Georgetown
By ROCKY STANLEY - The Independent
ASHLAND —
For Emily Greene, it’s the best of both worlds.
Not only will the Ashland Blazer senior attend Georgetown College, but there’s more soccer in her future.
Greene, who carries a 4.2 grade point average, recently signed a Letter of Intent on Ashland’s campus with new Georgetown women’s soccer coach Leah Crews on hand to watch.
“I’ve had an interest in Georgetown ever since I was a freshman, mainly for academics,’’ Greene said. “When I found I had the opportunity to play soccer there, it was even better.’’
Crews invited Greene to a soccer tryout last month.
“One day after school, I went down for a trial practice with the team,’’ Greene said. “Coach Crews pulled me aside and said she was impressed. It’s a dream come true to be able to play in college and continue my career because not many people get that opportunity after high school.’’
Greene played several positions during her high school soccer career. Most of her senior year was spent on the defensive half of the field. Along with her defensive work, Greene contributed four goals and an assist last season.
For her career, Greene had 13 goals and five assists for one of the area’s top programs.
“Emily is a smart girl and a hard worker,’’ said Ashland coach E.B. Lowman. “I’m excited that Georgetown is giving her an opportunity. I know she will give her best effort.’’
This past week, Greene was among eight area high school students to receive an AK Steel Self-Reliance award. That’s one of her several scholarship aids towards college tuition.
Georgetown College is a member of the Mid-South Conference and competes on the NAIA level.
Greene said she is looking forward to the challenge of playing college soccer.
“I think coach Lowman has really prepared me for what I am going to see next year,’’ Greene said.
She has already received her Georgetown preseason workout schedule from Crews via e-mail.
“The last thing, in capital letters, was that she wants everybody to be in tip-top shape,’’ Greene said. “I’m going to have to be diligent and committed in working out and getting ready.’’
