Greenup County’s bats remained red hot as the Musketeers scored five runs in the top of the first and never looked back in a battle of two of the region’s top teams at Larry Addington Field on Thursday night.
Greenup County scored five runs on five straight hits in the first, capitalizing on two Boyd County errors, and set the tone of the game before ever having to take the field. The Musketeers went on to a 12-8 victory to improve their record to 13-4.
“I was real happy with that,” Greenup County coach Greg Logan said about the first inning. “I think we impressed a lot of people with our sticks tonight.”
The early offensive outpour came after two quick outs to start the game. Boyd County’s Chase Wiler needed just three pitches to get two lazy fly balls to right field.
However, nearly as quickly as the Musketeers had two outs on themselves, they lit up the scoreboard with five runs. Catcher Billy Logan started things with a double to deep center field. James Madden and Justin Chaffins followed with singles before Tyler Hieneman drilled a pitch off the center-field wall for a bases-clearing double and a 4-0 Greenup County lead.
Tyler Peveto scored the Musketeers’ final run of the first, coming all the way around from first base on a steal that produced two Boyd County errors.
Greenup County put four more runs on the board in the fourth inning, highlighted by Billy Logan’s two-run homer to left center. It was Logan’s fourth long ball of the season. Eric Craft and Zack Reed also had run-scoring hits in the inning as the Musketeers stretched their lead to 10-0.
Greenup County scored another run in the fifth to make it 11-0.
Wiler, Boyd County’s starter, gave up 10 runs on nine hits through four innings.
“Greenup County is a good team at the plate as far as hitting mistake pitches,” Boyd County coach Ben Maynard said. “Chase had decent stuff but just wasn’t locating very well. If you miss your spots against (Greenup), they’re going to make you pay. He threw well, he just wasn’t very sharp and they made him pay for it. That team is very capable of doing that to anyone.”
Greenup County had 13 hits against the Lions, following a 15-hit performance in a win over Ashland on Wednesday.
While Wiler gave up 10 runs, only four of them were earned, as the Lions committed five errors.
“It’s one of the things we’ve preached to the team, you can’t give teams extra outs,” Maynard said. “When you do, you get hurt. All the sudden you’re down five or six. In our case it was 11 tonight.”
The game looked like it might be heading for a mercy-rule ending in the fifth inning. The Lions extending the game, however, when Jacob Plummer went into the opposite field gap to score two on a triple with two outs in the inning.
The Lions scored four more times in the seventh, backed by a two-run triple by Logan Helms.
“We played a lot better ball the last three innings,” Maynard said. “The guys started to figure them out at the plate and were able to hit the ball to the opposite field. We played hard, but against a team like Greenup you’re going to have to show up for seven, not three.”
With a comfortable lead, Greg Logan was able to stick with starter Kyle Martin a little longer than he normally might have. Martin pitched the complete game, allowing eight runs on 10 hits.
Greg Logan also knew he wouldn’t have Martin for games this weekend and was looking to log a few more innings out of him. Martin is planning a trip to North Carolina this weekend to see off his brother, who is set to serve time in Iraq.
Martin struck out six Boyd County batters.
“If you can’t get pumped up for Boyd County on a day like today, with not a cloud in the sky, than you need to be doing something else,” Greg Logan said. “We’re excited to get three wins under our belts this week and hit the road.”
The Musketeers head to Tates Creek this weekend for three games against tough competition. They’ll face Owen County, Tates Creek and DuPont Manual.
Boyd County (7-7) plays at West Jessamine on Saturday.
