Boyd County Classic is set

Track and field teams compete Saturday at Boyd County High

By ROCKY STANLEY - The Independent

CANNONSBURG Track and field teams from a dozen Kentucky schools will compete for titles in the 34th annual Boyd County Classic on Saturday.

Russell’s boys and girls are the defending champions, but face strong challenges on both sides.

All-purpose athlete Zach Virgin and distance runners Matt Collins and Tanner Alexander lead Russell’s boys squad.

Also rated as top contenders in the boys division are Lawrence County, Ashland and Paintsville. Host Boyd County is led by throwers Justin Selby and Lauren Luttrell.

On the girls’ side, a strong Dixie Heights girls team took first place at Rowan County last week.

Other teams expected to be in the girls’ mix with Dixie Heights and Russell are Fairview, Ashland and Boyd County. Ashland and Boyd County feature top young sprinters in Mykal Farris and Jessica Adams, respectively.

Other than Dixie Heights, the overall field consists of area teams. Other schools represented will be East Carter, Rose Hill Christian, Morgan County, Lewis County and Bath County.

“There are so many people with tracks now that are hosting meets, we don’t have the 18 or 19 teams like in past years,’’ said Boyd County coach Shawn Thornbury. “But 12 is a pretty good number.’’

Field events are set for 9:30 a.m., with prelims to begin about 10:15.

Following the prelims, Boyd County will add to its track/cross country Hall of Fame with an induction ceremony honoring former standouts David Tackett and Terry Miles.
