Sweet tooth required: An edible look at the yuletide season

‘Holidays at the Highlands’ will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday

ASHLAND — With details created from fruit chews to chocolate bars and tiny tarts, holiday houses made entirely of edibles will be among the stars of the show as the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center presents “Home Sweet Homes” as part of a series of holiday activities aimed at family fun.

Opening night for “Holidays at the Highlands” is Thursday, with activities and attractions from 6 to 8 p.m. featuring gingerbread houses and a village hand-crafted by area individuals and organizations, along with holiday music, pictures with Santa, a silent auction and light refreshments.

Kathy Hill, a recently retired culinary instructor at Paul G. Blazer High School, said she “nabbed” Carolyn Eggleston to help wrangle gingerbread house builders, resulting in breathtaking submissions from school groups in Kentucky and Ohio, as well as individuals and the chef at Bellefonte Country Club.

“They have used every color of the rainbow,” Hill said, describing one gingerbread house which salutes Christmas celebrations in Mexico. “And, this light house is just fantastic.”

Details make the gingerbread houses special, the ladies noted, pointing out trees made of inverted ice cream cones and garage doors fashioned from sections if Hershey bars.

“Of course there’s lots of frosting, licorice, M&Ms, cookies, pretzels ... and cereals, lots of cereals,” Eggleston said, pointing to the simulated thatch roofs made of mini-wheats.
