There’s a lot happening with Summer Motion’s silver anniversary.
The festival’s website, summermotion.com, has been bombarded to the point where webmaster Joe Nilles had to make some adjustments to handle the traffic overflow.
“Joe worked past midnight last night (Tuesday) and again this morning (Wednesday),” said John McGlone of Ashland Community and Technical College, where Nilles is also the webmaster.
The large volume of hits to the website “overwhelmed our servers,” McGlone said. “It caused the system to shut down because of the volume of hits.”
The festival also has a Facebook page churning out new information by the hour, he said. It has become a popular site as well, McGlone said.
A contest for VIP tickets to see Loverboy had more than 185 entrants, he said.
“The Facebook site is working perfectly,” McGlone said. “We want anybody who needs information to get there. They’re used to handling zillions of people. They can handle a lot more traffic.”
The attention the main bands is causing is further evidence of the tourism value of Summer Motion, McGlone said.
“Based on the requests we’re seeing for concert information, directions to the riverfront and hotel information, I’d definiely say it’s a tourism tool,” he said. “People from outside the region are looking at this as a destination with the quality lineup we have for free. If you can travel 100 or 200 miles, you can save the money on the tickets and stay the night at a hotel.”
Restaurants are expected to be packed this week as Summer Motion opens with three nights on the riverfront. The annual Fourth of July fireworks display will take place at 10:15 p.m. today after country band Sawyer Brown takes the stage. On Friday, Styx is the headliner; tickets for the VIP area and the seats behind it are in high demand.
“I’ve had 20 people ask me for tickets,” McGlone said. “The quality of sound we have and the way the riverfront is laid out, there’s not many bad seats anywhere. Bring a blanket and sit under the stars.”
McGlone said about five from the media committee will be sharing on Facebook each night and through the weekend.
“We’re going to have a great time,” he said.
