For fans of Maker’s Mark bourbon, dipping the neck of a bottle is an act of love.
Fans of the Kentucky whiskey took advantage of an opportunity to create one of a kind gift bottles at Ashland Beverage Centre on Wednesday afternoon, layering holiday green wax over the signature red wax each bottle is dipped into by hand before leaving the distillery in Loretto.
“With the holidays coming on we and the folks at Maker’s Mark thought it would be a good thing to do to keep up the holiday spirit,” said ABC owner Paul Daniels.
Maker’s Mark territory manager Ginger Flowers said the distillery spread word about the bottle dipping via an electronic invitation for area members of the Ambassador’s Club. Flowers said many Maker’s Mark enthusiasts are capable of recognizing many things by examining the solidified wax used to hand seal each bottle, including if the dipper used his or her right or left hand, or even the specific identity of the woman who did the dipping at the distillery.
Explaining the proper technique for dipping a bottle, Flowers told Daniels to place his thumb on the back of the bottle and four fingers on the front, inserting the bottle to a point near the indent below the cap seal, “then dip, lift and start to twist,” she advised.
“Set it down with a little authority,” she said, explaining the solid set down helps gravity pull the still-liquid wax into “tentacles” down the neck of the container.
Phil Wurts of Ashland made a point of getting a green-and-red dipped bottle, although he deferred to Flowers for the actual dipping.
“I’ve been down to the factory and I’ve never seen it done,” Wurts said. “If you get a chance to go there in your travels, I recommend it. It’s the cleanest place I’ve ever been.”
Mike Lyons of Ironton donned an apron and other protective gear before dipping a bottle for his wife, Tina, who watched from a few feet away.
“That was awesome. It sure was,” Lyons said while allowing his wife’s special bourbon bottle to cool.
“I’m the bourbon drinker,” she said. “Maker’s Mark is the first bourbon I ever drank and it’s still my favorite.”
