ASHLAND — Student choir members from three area schools practiced Thursday under the combined direction of directors Karen Hopkins, Carl Taylor and Theresa Russell, rehearsing selections from the “Requiem” of British composer John Rutter.

The singers have been practicing together for weeks in preparation for the performance of their young lives — an engagement at Carnegie Hall.

Selected members of the Paul Blazer, Boyd County and Russell choirs will make the trip to New York for a March 17 concert with choirs from several other high schools.

The trip has been a year in the planning and students at all three schools have had dinner concerts, peddled fundraising merchandise, had a breakfast with Santa and bagged groceries, among other fundraising efforts.

When the choir convoy leaves March 13, there will be 29 students, six parents and the three directors.

They will enjoy the sights of New York, attend the Broadway musical “Newsies,” and rehearse for about four hours per day.

They will meet at the hall on concert night for their 8 p.m. curtain. They will be joined there by members of choirs from Jonesboro, Ark., Los Angeles, Calif., Storrs, Conn., and Eastern Connecticut University.
