Arrest made in Morgan double-fatal hit and run

Anonymous tip on Facebook leads KSP to Tony Kegley of West Liberty

Ezel — A tip submitted through social media led to an arrest Monday in a weekend hit-and-run accident in Morgan County that killed two pedestrians.

Tony C. Kegley Jr., 30, of West Liberty, was charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter in the deaths of Elizabeth Thornsberry, 41, of Ezel, and Tony Ross, 48, of Clearfield, Kentucky State Police at Morehead said. He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with physical evidence.

The KSP said it received an anonymous tip via Facebook that Kegley may have been involved in the incident shortly after 7 p.m. on Ky. 1010 near the Ezel community. Further investigation revealed Kegley owns a vehicle matching the description of the one that hit Thornsberry and Ross — a blue 2002 to 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 extended-cab, short-wheelbase pickup.

On Tuesday, the KSP executed a search warrant at Kegley’s residence and placed him under arrest. He was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where he remained on Wednesday.

According to the KSP, Thornsberry and Ross were killed after leaving Jaspers Bar in Maytown. Ross left the establishment on foot; Thornsberry followed in her 2001 Pontiac Bonneville. Both were headed east toward Ezel.

The KSP said it suspects at some point, Thornsberry stopped her car and got out to speak to Ross. Both were standing in the westbound lane of Ky. 1010 when they were struck and killed by a westbound vehicle, which continued on without stopping.
