Cancer survivors in Greenup County are invited to come celebrate their journeys during a luncheon hosted by the American Cancer Society. The event is in conjunction with the upcoming Relay for Life.
The survivors' luncheon will be at noon on March 16 at Greenup Christian Church, 711 Main St., Greenup.
Survivors, those in all stages of treatment, and their caregivers are invited to attend. Survivors will be given special gifts.
The theme for this year’s luncheon is "Spring into Celebration," according to Jujuana Hieneman, longtime Relay volunteer and coordinator for the luncheon.
Survivors do not have to participate in the Relay for Life to be a part of the event.
“The luncheon is a nice time to visit with each other in a place other than a treatment room or hospital," Hieneman explained. "It is a time to celebrate winning the battle for another year."
Sponsors, in addition to Greenup Christian Church, are Stultz Pharmacy, Tri-State Regional Cancer Society and Ashland-Bellefonte Cancer Center.
To RSVP for the luncheon or for more information, contact Mandy Parsons, relay coordinator, at (606) 325-8251 or Mandy.Parsons@cancer.org.
The event is part of the annual Relay For Life, which raises money for cancer research and programs that benefit cancer patients, survivors and their families. One in three people will have cancer in their lifetimes, which is why the Relay and the money it raises continue to be a vital fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
This year's Greenup County Relay, themed “Relay on the River," will run from 6 p.m. on May 3 through the night and until the morning of May 4. For the first time, the event is a “road course,” of sorts, with participants walking around the courthouse in downtown Greenup.
There is still time to get a team together for the event. To register, contact Parsons or log on to tRelayForLife.org/GreenupKY. There is also a Facebook page for the Greenup County relay.
Last year, 20 relay teams raised more than $42,000 in Greenup County.
