Girls Region tournament set in Morehead

Starts with a marathon

MOREHEAD —

The Girls 16th Region Tournament will tip off with a four-game marathon Saturday, March 2, at Morehead State's Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

Fleming County, the 61st District champions will take on 64th District runner-up Boyd County in the noon opener.

The second game of the morning session will be 63rd winner Russell taking on the runner-up from the 62nd, West Carter.

The evening session starts with 62nd champion East Carter taking on 63rd runner-up Lewis County at 6 p.m., followed by Ashland, the 64th champion, taking on Rowan County, the 61st runner-up.

With an entire week to prepare, coaches are eager to see how their teams respond.

“I like to have that time,” said Lewis County coach Jay Fite. “Every team is in the same boat.”

Said Boyd County coach Pete Fraley: “I'm kind of mixed about it, but we do have some sickness and girls banged up, so that will give us time to get healthy.”

East Carter-Lewis County is a rematch of the opening round last season. The Lady Raiders fell to the Lady Lions in Vanceburg.

East Carter coach Hager Easterling said anything can happen on any given night with this particular field.

“I think maybe only three or four teams can win three games in four days, but any team is capable of pulling off an upset,” Easterling said.

The semifinals are set for Monday at 6 and 7:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday at 7.

Ashland is the defending 16th Region champion. Boyd County took the title two seasons ago.
