ASHLAND — Healthy Choices Kentucky has given its members and other community organizations the opportunity to lead by example with the first Healthy Choices Kentucky Corporate Weight Loss Challenge. Businesses that have accepted the challenge are Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility, Oakmont Manor (three teams), the Greenup County Health Department (two teams) and Kentucky Farmers Bank.

The businesses accepted the four-month challenge by forming teams to lose weight. The competition will continue until July 24 when a team with the greatest percentage of loss from starting weights is declared the winner. Each team paid $120 to participate, with entry fees to be donated to the charity of the winning team’s choice. Contest participation includes free membership at Firm Fitness at Bellefonte Pavilion (2000 Ashland Drive) for each team member during the duration of the contest.

Healthy Choices Kentucky is a consortium formed as a response to eastern Kentucky’s high obesity rates. The 27-member Healthy Choices Kentucky has set as its overall goal a three-year project aimed at obesity. The group intends to halt the rise of the body mass index) average of Boyd and Greenup counties.
