Self-reliance awards presented

ASHLAND — Eight area teenagers received cash awards Thursday at the 58th annual AK Steel Self-Reliance Awards banquet.

The awards are presented annually to four top male and four top female graduating high school seniors.

Named after W.W. Sebald, a former president of Armco Steel, the predecessor of AK Steel, the awards were established to honor students for self-reliance and time management skills.

First-place finishers received $1,250, second place received $1,000, third place received $750 and fourth place received $500.

Winners included:

First place: Jordan Renee Rose, daughter of Jason and Michelle Ellis, Boyd County, and Parker Douglas Burke Touchton, son of Bobby and Trina Touchton, Paul G. Blazer.

Second place: Jennifer Ashley Russell, daughter of Charles Bruce and Anita Sue Russell, Fairview, and Landon Hayes Lauder, son of Terry and Elizabeth Vest, Russell.

Third place: Caitlin Anne Conley, daughter of Bryan and Sarah Conley, Boyd County, and Nicholas Dakota Watts, son of David and Theresa Watts, Paul G. Blazer.

Fourth place: Kelly Elizabeth Heishman, daughter of Robert and Shelly Clark, Paul G. Blazer, and Chris Matthew Fugate, son of Bryan and Lisa Fugate, Boyd County.

    A scan in 2009 that was supposed to show doctors what was causing Deborah Cline’s eye problems by chance revealed the cancer in her lung.
    Two years later, Roger Cline watched his wife die of lung cancer. Deborah Cline was 59 and had never smoked.
