OLBH awarded for ‘environmental excellence’

RUSSELL — Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital has been honored with the 2014 Partner for Change Award and the Circle of Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations.

The Partner for Change Award is one of the organization’s Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor outstanding environmental achievements in the health care sector. It is the fifth straight year OLBH has received the honor.

The Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling and source reduction programs. At a minimum, facilities applying for this award must be recycling 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are well along the way to mercury elimination and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs in many different areas.

This year, Practice Greenhealth bestowed four new awards that recognize special achievements in environmental excellence in health care and OLBH was a recipient of the Circle of Excellence Award, which celebrates facilities with sustainability programs that excel in a given category, including climate, chemicals, energy, environmentally preferable purchasing, waste, water and others. OLBH’s honor was given for the hospital’s environmental excellence in its food services.

“Practice Greenhealth Award winners demonstrate that the health of their patients, staff and community is central to the core of their mission,” said Gary Cohen, founder and president of Practice Greenhealth. “These Award winners have a vision that all health care organizations should strive for in the future.”

The Practice Greenhealth awards were presented this month in Cleveland at the 12-year anniversary celebration and gala dinner for the Environmental Excellence Awards, the premier national environmental conference for leaders in health care sustainability. Practice Greenhealth is the nation’s leading membership and networking organization for institutions in the healthcare community that have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices.

“We take pride in our greening efforts here at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital and we are greatly honored to have received this recognition for a fifth straight year,” Diana Williams, chairperson of the OLBH Green Team, said. “We look forward to working with Practice Greenhealth to continue to enhance our sustainability efforts and lessen our impact on the environment.”
