Fun with paint after a hard week

ASHLAND — Last week’s stressful round of accountability tests took its toll on faculty and students alike at Oakview Elementary School, so fifth-grade teacher Samantha Royalty turned her students loose with paintbrushes in a just-for-fun hour of painting ceramic tiles Tuesday.

Under the direction of Leah Lockhart, manager of The Pottery Place in Russell, the children painted pictures of their own devising onto the tiles, which Lockhart took back to her store for final glazing and firing.

The 1,800-degree kiln will transform the muted paint colors into a vivid rainbow of hues, she promised the children.

“At the end of the year, children need to get out of the classroom for some hands-on activity to get their minds thinking in another way,” Royalty said.
