Shogun Japanese Steakhouse opens

ASHLAND — In a city where a new restaurant tends to be the talk of the town, Shogun Japanese Steakhouse opened to excellent word-of-mouth reviews here Wednesday.

Manager May Gao said the staff and kitchen crew were having to make a few adjustments to keep up with demand on the first day, although there was no shortage of hungry customers waiting for a taste of Ashland’s first purely Japanese-style establishment, including a full sushi bar. Gao said the new restaurant does not have “teppanyaki” tables, although foods are prepared in the hibachi style.

“We still have hibachi food, but we don’t cook it in front of you,” Gao said with a smile while juggling duties and asking the first wave of lunchtime customers if they enjoyed their meal.

The restaurant has undergone extensive renovations since Five Guys Burgers and Fries moved out, with Japanese interior decor and comfortable seating at tables, as well as seats at the sushi bar next to the kitchen area. Gao said the restaurant was designed to seat more than 100 diners.

The menu at Shogun Japanese Steakhouse is divided into lunch and dinner, as well as the hours of operation. The lunch menu features Bento Box meals with soup, salad, appetizer, main dish and white rice, as well as Chinese-style lunch combinations including sweet & sour chicken, General Tso’s chicken and sesame chicken entrees.

Lunch sushi and sashimi, served with miso soup, house salad and rolls include California Roll, Boston Roll, Tuna Roll, avocado roll and cucumber roll, among others, as well as in combinations. Hibachi lunch specials range from traditional vegetable to shrimp, salmon and squid to filet mignon. Lunch is also served Thai style, with options including Panang curry, as well as red/green/yellow curry, or basil.

Dinner-menu options begin with an extensive selection of hot (french fries to soft-shell crab) or cold (from crabmeat and cucumber to yellowtail tuna and jalapeno) appetizers, as well as salad and soup selections. Sushi “A La Carte” options include red clam, smelt roe, mackerel, red snapper, salmon, yellow tail, white tuna, squid, striped bass, scallop and salmon roe among others.

Under the “sushi special roll” portion of the menu, diners will find options including the Ashland Roll, featuring tuna, salmon and yellow tail deep fried and topped with shrimp and special sauce, as well as a WV Roll, made with shrimp tempura, cream cheese, avocado and crab meat with masago and special sauce on top. Teriyaki dinners including tofu, vegetable, chicken, salmon, shrimp and steak options, as well as Tempura dinners, Nabemono and five styles of fried rice. The dinner menu also has an extensive selection of sushi entrees (including the New River Gorge Bridge), hibachi dinners and combinations. The “Titanic Boat,” with 46 pieces of sashimi, 32 pieces of sushi, spider roll, shrimp tempura roll, rainbow roll and dragon roll, is the most expensive option listed on the Shogun menu.

The menu for Shogun Japanese Steakhouse, located at 418 River Hill Drive, also indicates full-bar service. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for lunch, and from 4 to 10 p.m. for dinner; from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday and again from 4 to 11 p.m. for dinner; from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
