ASHLAND — Woman killed in U.S. 23 wreck


A Boyd County woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 23 at Burnaugh Tuesday morning.

Carrie Kirk, 54, of Burnaugh, was pronounced dead at the accident scene by the Boyd County Coroner’s Office.

The accident occurred at 10:35 a.m. According to the Boyd County Sheriff’s Department, Kirk was pulling out of the Burnaugh BP and attempting to enter the southbound lanes of U.S. 23 when her 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier was struck by a northbound 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Bill M. Thompson, 62, of Prestonsburg.

Thompson was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center. Kirk and Thompson were both wearing seat belts and were the only occupants of their respective vehicles, the sheriff’s department said.

Russell man arrested by FADE


A Russell man was arrested on drug charges Monday after the Russell Police Department executed a search warrant in the 400 block of Railroad Street.

William D. Darling, 47, was charged with first-degree drug trafficking and first-degree drug possession, according to a news release from the FADE Drug Task Force.

Officers confiscated oxycodone pills, cash and a loaded shotgun. Darling was lodged in the Greenup County Detention Center, where he remained Tuesday.

The FADE Task Force is comprised of officers of the Flatwoods, Olive Hill, Raceland, Vanceburg and Russell police departments and the Carter County Sheriff’s Department.

Heart-health luncheon set


A Go Red for Women event will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Allen Chapel Church of Christ at 64 Allen Chapel Road.

The speaker will be Megan Boggs, who will discuss the importance of diet and exercise in the prevention of heart disease.

Attendees are asked to wear comfortable clothing and to bring two small cans of food, which will be used in an exercise after the event. Those who wish may donate their cans to Greenup County High School’s food pantry.

A light lunch will be served and door prizes awarded.

Ashland BOE meets Thursday


The Ashland Board of Education will meet in special session at noon Thursday in the Board Conference Room at 1820 Hickman St.

Demolition bids for Putnam Stadium will be reviewed and the superintendent’s annual evaluation discussed.

Parkinson’s walk will be May 18


The Coalition for the Cure of Parkinson’s Disease will host an awareness and fundraising walk from 10 a.m. to noon May 18 at the Kyova Mall.
