Local athletes participate in Swim around Key West

Key West, Fla. — A group of local swimmers participated in the 37th annual Swim around Key West on Saturday, traveling to Florida for the event.

The swimmers participated in individual and relay divisions. The relay team of Cheri Dilego, Allyson Bays and DeNeil Hartley finished the 12.5-mile course in six hours and 50 minutes. Dilego swam the first four miles, including 2.5 miles of rough seas. Bay’s four miles were marked by 20 mph head winds and Harley anchored the relay through a shallow water.

Cox finished the course in five hours and 15 minutes. Cox has competed in the race twice, improving his race time this weekend by 30 minutes.

The team was supported by medical staff nurse Larissa Reynolds and kayakers who accompanied swimmers. They included: Bethany Cox Phillips, Allyson Burton Brake, Paul Hartwig and Marty Bays. Brake and Reynolds served as alternates for the race.
