A local fitness business in Ashland is expanding, and will soon begin offering the popular CrossFit exercise program to children.
CrossFit Countdown will launch CrossFit Kids beginning Monday, July 1. The gym, at 2600 Greenup Avenue, opened last year and has been steadily growing its clientele.
CrossFit Kids will be open to five to 12-year-olds with classes scheduled Monday through Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Classes last between 45 and 60 minutes. CrossFit Kids will have its own part of the gym.
The instructor is Cassandra Poff, who was recently received her CrossFit Kids certification. Similar to the adult version, CrossFit Kids uses “randomized, functional exercise performed at high intensity,” which can be scaled and adjusted to fit individualized needs.
But CrossFit kids is not just a scaled-down version of adult CrossFit, according to Poff and gym owner and CrossFit instructor Ger Sasser.
“It is way more fun,” said Sasser.
“We will play a lot more games,” said Poff, “and we don’t put weight on them until they are doing everything perfect because we don’t want them to hurt themselves.”
Poff said children won’t be disciplined using exercise, because playing the physical fitness games are the reward. They will also learn simple movements that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
For example, she said, “At the kids certification they showed us how to teach them to pick up their book bag and put it on their back.
“Really, the more body awareness you get as a kid, the better off you will be,” said Sasser, explaining smaller children typically haven’t developed bad habits like poor posture that are hard to correct the older they get.
Eventually, according to Poff, the gym will begin having a teens class as well as one for toddlers as young as age 3. A “mommy and me” class is also in the works, said Poff.
The gym also hopes to begin hosting monthly “date night” events, that would allow parents to get a night out while their kids get some good physical activity entertainment.
