HUNTINGTON — Escapee caught in Huntington

HUNTINGTON - A federal work-release inmate who allegedly took cash from his employer and absconded on Friday is back in custody.

Greg Scott Gallion, 52, of Ashland, was arrested Sunday night at a Huntington-area hotel by Cabell County sheriff’s deputies. The sheriff’s department received a tip from someone who recognized the fugitive.

He was booked into the Western Regional Jail early Monday morning.

Gallion, who was convicted of robbing the Citizens National Bank branch in Russell in 2009, had been in custody at the Transitions Inc. halfway house on 29th Street. Acording to the U.S. Marshal Service, he took cash and fled from the convenience store in Catlettsburg where he had been working.

Gallion was originally scheduled to be released from custody today.

Library offers download tips

ASHLAND - Classes at the Boyd County Public Library in September will demonstrate downloading free books and other materials to digital devices.

“Your Digital Library” will be at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the main branch, 1740 Central Ave. Each week will be geared toward a different device: Sept. 4, iPad, iPod and iPhone; Sept. 11, Kindle; Sept. 18: Nook and other devices. Those who attend need to bring the device to which they wish to download.

The series will be repeated in October at noon on Wednesdays.

Library staff will give an overview of the free downloading services available through BCPL, including OverDrive, Freading and OneClick digital. Staff will then work individually with participants to download materials, as time permits. Instruction sheets will also be available to take home.

OverDrive is the ebook provider for Kentucky Libraries Unbound, a consortium of libraries in the commonwealth, which BCPL joined in 2006. Through OverDrive, BCPL customers have access to more than 12,000 ebooks and 10,000 audiobooks.

Freading was added to the library’s downloading services in 2012. The collection includes more than 20,000 titles, with about 600 new ones added each month. Freading offers multiple copies, so there is generally no waiting, even for new releases.

OneClick Digital is the library’s audiobook provider, which gives BCPL card holders access to about 4,000 always-available audiobook titles published by Recorded Books.

Links to all of these free services are found at thebookplace.org.

BCPL spends about 20 percent of its materials budget on the purchase of ebooks and downloadable audiobooks. For more information, call (606) 329-0090.
