RUSSELL — The annual yard sale which runs from Greenup County to Letcher County is under way, with Boyd County officials reporting strong early interest in the local portion of the U.S. 23 Highway Yard Sale.

“People started setting up yesterday. They’ve caught on. They go the day before,” said Ashland Convention and Visitors Bureau spokesman Sue Dowdy, explaining the official Boyd/Greenup County site for the annual event is the parking lot at Sargent’s Tires, at the corner of U.S. 23 and Hoods Creek Pike at the entrance for Westwood.

“It’s highly successful and people look forward to it,” Dowdy said, noting the event has grown each year since Prestonsburg tourism director suggested the event as  a way to unify counties along The Country Music Highway, with the hope that visitors might return to patronize local shops and tourism sites or attend a musical performance. While most of the phone calls related to the yard sale are focused on location and setup space, Dowdy said many are seeking information about things to see or do in the area.

“We’ve had people ask about the music particularly,” Dowdy said, citing wide interest in The Judds, Billy Ray Cyrus and perhaps most notably, Loretta Lynn.

Yard sales are encouraged in public and private settings during the annual event, although those with things to sell are not allowed on state right-of-ways.

Dowdy said a team from the Boyd County Detention Center is credited for sprucing up the local yard sale area, as well as placing and collecting garbage cans at the site. The yard sale continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Saturday.
