Café announces weekend events
The Lamp Post Café will host several events this weekend.
‰Local veterans will meet at 9 a.m. Friday for their monthly meeting. Matt Potter of the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center will discuss activities and programs for veterans.
‰ A poetry reading is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday with Ashland native and poet Matthew Haughton as part of the First Friday art walk. Haughton will also sign books and read aloud at 3 p.m.
The restaurant is at the corner of 15th Street and Greenup Avenue.
Giving Tree signup set
The Community Assistance and Referral Service will begin holiday signups for the annual Giving Tree program from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 21 through 25 and Oct. 28 through Nov. 1 at The Neighborhood at 2516 Carter Ave.
To sign up children up to age 16 to receive gifts in the program, respond during these times; a current Neighborhood card is required and can be obtained at CAReS from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with photo ID for all adults, proof of address, proof of income, Social Security numbers and birthdates for all in the household.
Custodial parents may sign up and must bring Neighborhood card for everyone in the home; current photo ID for adults in the household; proof of Boyd County residency (utility bill with name and address, rent receipt, etc.); Social security cards for all children; and clothing sizes and wish lists for all children.
Participants are cross-referenced with partner agencies that provide similar services, including the Salvation Army and area family resource centers, to avoid duplication of benefits.
CAReS seeks assistance from area businesses, churches and individuals to host toy/clothing drives or volunteer to host the Giving Tree table at Ashland Town Center from Nov. 17 through Dec. 6.

Children’s flu clinic delayed
The Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital children’s flu clinic, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been rescheduled for Oct. 19.
The clinic will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of Bellefonte Centre (1000 Ashland Drive) on the hospital campus.
Cost of the vaccination is $20 for the traditional vaccine and $25 for Flumist.

SAR will have Tuesday meeting
The John Howe Chapter Sons of the American Revolution will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Flatwoods branch of the Greenup County Public Library.

Church yard sale Oct. 12
Argillite Nazarene Church will have a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12.
Proceeds will benefit breast cancer awareness and research.
The church is on Ky. 1 past the River Bend Golf Course.
Second Sunday upcoming
Boyd County’s Second Sunday event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 13 in Central Park.
The free event will include walking, cycling, roller blading, corn hole, inflatables, rope jumping and other physical activities.
Aerobic trainers from the Ashland YMCA will teach a group for all ages.
Prizes will be awarded and the first 100 to attend will receive free T-shirts.

AARF fundraisers scheduled
The Ashland Animal Rescue Fund has several fundraisers scheduled.
‰A golf scramble will be Saturday at Sandy Creek Golf Course. Registration will be at 8 a.m., with tee time at 9. Prizes are $300 for first, $250 for second and $200 for third. There will be a hole-in-one contest.
The cost is $50 per golfer or $200 for a team of four.
‰Canine Wine and Dine will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at Rock Springs Winery in Grayson. Tickets are $35 per single and $60 per couple at the door. The event includes appetizers, music, a silent auction and a scavenger hunt. AARF items will be for sale.
‰Bingo to benefit AARF will begin Saturday and continue every Saturday and Sunday in the Kyova Mall community room.
Doors will open at 4 p.m. and bingo will begin at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available. Bingo packs cost $5.
