Russell superintendent hired

RUSSELL — Russell Middle School principal Sean Horne, described by the school board chairwoman as a man of

“passion and zeal,” will take over as superintendent of the district July 1.

The board hired Horne Monday night after a search that yielded 29 applicants.

Horne’s contract is for four years at $100,000 per year.

The board interviewed six of them and Horne stood out, according to board chair Judy Ledford. “The person we wanted we knew would rise to the top and indeed that person did rise to the top,” she said.

Ledford said Horne is passionate about school and about the Russell district. “He lives and breathes Russell,” she said.

His record as middle school principal and his commitment to excellence in the district made him an attractive prospect, she said. “He is so adamant about keeping Russell going the direction it should be going. He will be in line with state standards. He will make sure people are doing what they are here to do.”

Horne said his first order of business will be to circulate through the district to meet and greet staff and constituents. He plans to schedule public meetings at each of the district’s four schools so parents can ask him questions and air concerns.

One of his first initiatives will be to create a mentoring program for administrators, teachers and counselors, he said.

He also will have to contend with filling the principal vacancy at the middle school. “It’s a major decision right off the bat, so there’s no time to rest,” he said.

Horne will be working on a transition plan starting today with exiting Superintendent Susan Compton.
